Billionaire Stephen Cloobeck arrested on charge of trying to dissuade witness
Stephen Cloobeck, the billionaire founder of Diamond Resorts International who abruptly ended his relationship with former Rep. Eric Swalwell and evicted him from a California mansion amid sexual misconduct allegations, was arrested Tuesday.
Cloobeck turned himself in to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department in West Hollywood after authorities issued a warrant. He faces a felony charge of attempting to prevent or dissuade a victim or witness from testifying, according to the California Post. Details of the alleged crime are unclear. Jail records show he posted $300,000 bail and was released. Fox News Digital sought comment from the sheriff's department and Cloobeck.
"These charges are false, and we look forward to our day in court," Cloobeck's spokesperson told the newspaper.
Cloobeck, a onetime California gubernatorial candidate, had backed Swalwell's run for governor until sexual assault allegations surfaced. He then cut ties with Swalwell and quit the Democratic Party.
"I am no longer supporting Eric. F---ing tell everyone I’m a libertarian. F--- you, Democratic Party. I’m a libertarian now," Cloobeck told the Post at the time.
"I am now a Republican," he added to Fox 11 LA.
Swalwell denied the allegations in a video shot inside Cloobeck's home. Cloobeck, who briefly campaigned for governor before dropping out and endorsing his former friend, said he evicted Swalwell from the Beverly Hills mansion because Swalwell "busted the trust" between them.
