19-Year-Old Charged in Peter Kay Concert Bomb Hoax Removed from Court
A 19-year-old charged in an alleged bomb hoax that forced the evacuation of Peter Kay's show was removed from a magistrates court Monday after outbursts during the hearing.
Omar Majed, from Birmingham, entered no plea to a charge of communicating false information to police. He was remanded in custody at the city's magistrates' court.
The court heard that Majed barged into Birmingham's Utilita Arena without a ticket on Friday. He allegedly told a police constable and others that a bomb may have been left at the venue.
Majed, from Saltley, was taken out partway through the hearing. He is due at Birmingham Crown Court on June 1.
Thousands of fans were evacuated from the arena. Prosecutor Ros Buttler told the court the hoax had serious repercussions at an event expecting nearly 13,000 people.
The charge states Majed communicated to a police officer and others information he knew or believed to be false: that a bomb was present in the arena.
During the brief hearing, Majed, of Graham Road, was repeatedly told to be quiet by District Judge Michelle Smith and to stay seated.
He protested that proposed bail conditions were not acceptable. He was then taken to the cells before the hearing ended.
Kay left the stage about 45 minutes into his set, part of his Better Late Than Never national tour.
