Trump announces deal to end US-Iran hostilities
The announcement of a deal to end hostilities between the US and Iran gave President Donald Trump a welcome birthday present, though the agreement still carries uncertainty.
Trump said in a social media post that the Strait of Hormuz would be open to commercial shipping and that the US would lift its naval blockade. He added that, unlike past presidents, he had secured a "great deal" that would bring "peace and security to the whole region."
Vice President JD Vance told Fox News on Sunday evening that the agreement ensures Iran will never possess a nuclear weapon and that the US will be able to verify compliance.
Questions remain over the limits on uranium enrichment and the fate of Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Some of those issues are expected to be settled in follow-up talks during a 60-day extension of the current ceasefire.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council said Sunday that final negotiations would be postponed until after the other party carries out its commitments under the memorandum.
Energy analysts said oil shipments through the strait are unlikely to return to pre-war levels right away. Clearing a backlog of tankers, removing mines and restoring regular production could take weeks.
Trump also told the Wall Street Journal that he was angry at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for ordering strikes on Lebanon this weekend that he feared could have derailed the Iran deal.
The president said his main message to Americans was "thank you" and promised that energy prices would start to fall.
Recent polling shows 63 percent of Americans disapprove of his handling of the economy and 57 percent believe conditions are worsening. Lower fuel costs could ease some of that pressure ahead of November's midterm elections.
