Washington — Rep. Barry Moore won the Republican Senate runoff in Alabama on Tuesday night, CBS News projects, defeating political newcomer and U.S. Navy SEAL Jared Hudson.

Moore and Hudson competed for the nomination after no candidate reached 50 percent of the vote in last month's primary. Moore had nearly 40 percent then, while Hudson had almost 26 percent. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall was eliminated.

The Republicans sought to replace Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who decided to leave the Senate and run for governor.

Moore's runoff win puts the congressman, who has represented Alabama in the House since 2021, in position for the Senate. Alabama has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in three decades outside of former Sen. Doug Jones' 2017 special election victory. President Trump carried the state by 30 points in 2024.

The contest showed the strength of the president's endorsement. Trump backed Moore and called him an America First Patriot and friend who has been with him from the beginning. Hudson tried to cast himself as an outsider committed to Trump's agenda, but Moore prevailed.

Moore, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, ran as a strong Trump supporter and was the first elected official to endorse the president in 2015.

Moore will face either business owner Dakarai Larriett or attorney Everett Wess in November. The two competed for the Democratic nomination in a runoff on Tuesday.
